Biographical / Historical
Founded in 1911 as the Department of Industrial Research of the University of Pittsburgh; name changed in 1913 to Mellon Institute of Industrial Research and School of Specific Industries. In 1927, it was incorporated as a separate institutionaffiliated with the university and renamed Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. Name was changed in 1962 to Mellon Institute to conform with general usage.
