Sanford Friedman papers
Content Description
14 boxes of correspondence, notebooks, manuscripts, and diaries by American author Sanford Friedman. Friedman was a CFA alum (’49), an author, playwright, producer, and educator who spent most of his career in NYC. He passed in 2010. The collection consists of manuscripts of his novels, short stories and plays, as well as his journals related to his novels, and decades of correspondence with noted poets and artists such as Lee Krasner. Friedman's most well-known book, Totempole (1965) was partly set at CMU and is considered by some to be the first instance of a main character who is both Jewish and gay in American fiction.
