This series contains one box (1 cubic foot) of material documenting Schatz’s position as Dean of Research. Folders are arranged alphabetically by topic, then by date.

It contains proposals and background information on the creation of the Mellon-Pitt-Carnegie (MPC) Corporation. This non-profit entity, comprised of Mellon Institute, University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Institute of Technology, was formed on May 7, 1963 to bring to the Pittsburgh community substantial government-supported research and development projects. It recognized the importance of permitting competing institutions to engage cooperatively in certain research and educational activities. The first project of MPC was to establish a materials research program. The series also contains several publications and reports on the history, progress, and future of Carnegie Tech.

Biographical/Historical note

Schatz served as Dean of Research at Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1961 to 1964. This administrative position reported to the president of Carnegie Tech. He worked to strengthen the research programs at Tech by writing and submitting grants, and coordinating research programs.
