Papers concerning Professor Shull’s research at MIT are housed in Boxes 4 through 13 of the collection and are 9 linear feet in length. At this point in his career, Professor Shull tended to gather his information into folders along research topic lines. Often, a folder in this sub-series will contain, articles, correspondence, graphic material, manuscripts for publication, and notes on a particular research topic. The date on the notes or the manuscript for publication was usually the most recent date found in the folder and indicative of the time of the culmination of the research. This sub-series was not found in any apparent order, so the papers folders were placed in ascending chronological order based on the most recent date of the material found in the folder.

Numerous items in this series were not in labeled file folders or were not in file folders at all. However, fasteners (usually metal paper clips) were used by Professor Shull for related materials. When titles for file folder labels had to be created by the archival staff, the title appears within brackets, e.g. [Design of the Cold Neutron Moderator Facility at BNL]. Likewise, when the archival staff felt a title should be augmented for clarity, the augmentation will appear in brackets.

An intriguing example of the interplay between experimental physicists and theoretical physicists is displayed in this sub-series. When Professor Shull’s research group began to delve into the exploration of quantum theory with neutron interferometers, their incredible mix of experimental and theoretical input captures the essence of what a marriage of the two can yield.
