The bulk of the correspondence was generated by the Alumni Federation in response to the resignation announcement of then President Arthur Arton Hamerschlag. The correspondence documents the fears of the alumni as to future direction of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the response of members of the Board of Trustees, whom Hamerschlag was at odds with at the time. All of these correspondence, and notes, related were generated in 1922, the year of Hamerschlag’s resignation announcement. Included in this is a copy of the resignation letter to the Board of Trustees, and the File of Council, City of Pittsburgh Series 1922 File 652 Bill 1482 concerning the lands held by Carnegie Mellon University as granted by the City of Pittsburgh, as published in 1922.
