Scope and Contents

The Annual Reports series has been arranged in four subseries: Carnegie Institute of Technology, Carnegie Institute of Technology (unpublished), Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Carnegie Institute.

The Annual Reports of the Director of Carnegie Institute of Technology are available for 1915-1923. They contain a list of committee members, reviews the administrative functions performed over the past year, in addition to financial statements, and abstracts of reports from the Secretary, the Registrar, the Department of Student Health, the School of Applied Science, the School of Applied Industries, the School of Applied Design--which includes architecture, painting, music, and drama--and from the Margaret Morrison Carnegie School.

The Unpublished Annual Reports files are non-published reports of the director of the Carnegie Technical Schools, after 1912 the Carnegie Institute of Technology, from 1903-1936, with significant gaps between 1909-1913, 1922-1928, and 1929-1935. Arthur Arton Hemarschlag was the Director through 1922, and the files for 1928-29, and 1935-36 were created by the offices of Presidents Thomas Baker and Robert Doherty, respectively. The files generated by Hamerschlag contain original signatures and handwritten notes, correspondence, and accounting documents.

The Carnegie Corporation of New York Annual Reports are available for five of the ten years between 1940 and 1950. They are reports of the president and the treasurer for the prior fiscal year. They contain lists of the Board of Trustees and the Administration. The President’s Report encompasses the administrative functions preformed throughout the year in a narrative form, which is followed by an appendix of primary documents. Following is a substantial treasurers report.

The Carnegie Institute Pittsburgh Annual Reports of the Officers, Committees, and Departments are available for 1936-1938. They contain lists of the board of trustees, standing committees, heads of departments, the President’s report, the reports of the auditing committee and the pension committee, the financial statement, and the reports of the Departments of Fine Art, Carnegie Museum, and Carnegie Music Hall. The Carnegie Institute Annual Reports are hardbound publications available for the years 1912-1930, with the exceptions of 1916, 1917, and 1921. They contain lists of the board of trustees, standing committees, directors, the President’s Report, and the reports of the Auditing Committee, the Pension Committee, the Treasurer, the Finance Committee, the Director of Fine Arts, The Director of the Museum, and the Director of the Technical Schools. The interior pages of these publications in excellent condition, but the covers are in an advanced state of decay, and the researcher should be aware that the pigments from the covers can stain on contact.
