The Tarr Collection contains four series, student papers, projects, university, and AV, and takes up 10 linear feet. The student papers series consists of papers and articles created by students regarding subjects pertinent to Pittsburgh history and infrastructure. These papers range in in date from 1969-2007.

The project series contains Tarr's personal work on various subject matter relating to Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Mellon community. The majority of the series consists of the Homewood Cemetery project, the Environmental Action Task Force, and Pittsburgh urban development projects. Also included are general Pittsburgh historical items as well as a short subseries on Tarr's work with Southwestern Pennsylvania's transporation.

The general university papers of the Tarr Collection contain the professional correspondence of Tarr from 1979-2008. Also included in this series is a selection of papers from the Committee to Evaluate the President as well as Carnegie Mellon strategic planning. These papers are closed until thirty years after the date.

Finally, the AV series contains digital materials on Tarr's projects, lecture slides, and audio recordings of various interviews.
