Research in Information Processing -- Report, Budget, Correspondence, 1974

 File — Box: 6, Folder: 394

Scope and Contents

From the Series:

The records in this series consist primarily of research reports, manuals, theses, and the interactions between the department and other institutions. They date from 1955 - 1988 and take up approximately 1 and 3/4 linear feet. The early years consist primarily of student theses, and Bell's published papers. There is no raw research data contained in these files. However, the results of some of the research work being done by the department are well represented. There are reports and manuals representing the different stages of the work done on projects such as C.mmP/Hydra, ADA, Scribe, Spice, Hearsay, and Gandalf. The materials from the 1970s consist primarily of the Advanced Research Project Agency sponsored project of "Information Processing". The Department interacted with many other institutions and research facilities, such as Institut de Recherche d'Informatique et d'Automatique (IRIA). These collaborations and research exchanges are represented in this series. For further information regarding the interchange of information which occurred during the 1970s, the researcher is advised to look in the subseries Faculty and Student Relations of the Administrative Records series for the information contained in the Immigration Course. These files contain evidence of the speakers engaged to address students regarding their research, but has little information regarding the lecture itself. The Research series contains administrative materials regarding the Department's work with funding agencies such as the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). Within these files is the correspondence, memorandum, budgets and notes regarding research proposals and progress reports. Again, the majority of materials date from the 1970s, with little documentation prior to or after that decade. Some materials containing auxiliary information regarding research may be found in the Administrative Functions subseries of the Administrative Records series.
