Scope and Content Note
The Margaret Morrison Carnegie College Records are housed in nine archival boxes and one partial oversize box and are arranged in seven series. Series have been designated for Registrar's Records, Annual Reports, Minutes, Administration, Programs, Faculty, and Students. The records include reports, minutes, correspondence, registration cards, conference proceedings, writings, clippings, and other paper-based works.
The records are composed primarily of annual reports and various meeting minutes. There are relatively large correspondence files for some of the Deans of the College. Also featured are the writings of faculty and proceedings of conferences held on campus; present, but to a lesser extent, are the writing of students. As a whole, the records deal with the administration of the College and its programs, not with the students of the College.

Margaret Morrison Carnegie College (MMCC) was founded in 1903 as one of the four colleges of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa. The College was in existence from May 1906, with the registration of the first class, to 1973 when it completed its four-year phase out. Over its seventy years MMCC offered day and evening classes to provide students with practical, vocational training focused on the home. MMCC aimed to develop, "womanly attributes and give a foundation on which to build a career in distinctly feminine fields." The curriculums offered varied over time but included Home Economics, Costume Economics, Secretarial Studies (later known as Business Studies), General Studies, General Science (later Biological Sciences), Social Work, Nursing, and Library Work.
The phase out of MMCC began in 1969, when it was decided that freshman admissions would cease in 1969. The phase out was completed in 1973 with the graduation of the 1969 freshman class. The phase out was prompted by declining enrollment in Home Economics and Business Studies and steadily increasing enrollment in the sciences and humanities and social sciences. The end of Margaret Morrison Carnegie College also marked the beginning of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Separations
Five folders of oversize materials have been separated from the main body of records. The five folders are two architectural drawings, two class schedule layouts, and class notebook. The five folders are listed on the container list in their proper arrangement; instead of a FF (file folder) number, they have and OvSz (oversize) number designation. The Margaret Morrison Carnegie College oversize folders share an oversize box with School of Printing Management Records oversize materials.
