This collection contains the records of Allan H. Meltzer, a professor of political economy at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business who has also served as a consultant on economic policy for the Congress, U.S. Treasury, Federal Reserve, the World Bank and the U.S. and foreign governments. His teaching and research interests include the history of monetary policy, size of government, macroeconomics, and international financial reform. Included are papers published in academic journals, newspapers and magazines, unpublished papers, correspondence, press and annual reports as well as materials that document his role in the Shadow Open Market Committee (SOMC) and The International Financial Institution Advisory Commission (IFIAC).

Biography

Allan H. Meltzer is a professor of political economy at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business where he is the Allan H. Meltzer Professor of Political Economy and Public Policy. He was born in Boston February 6, 1928. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Duke University in 1948 and 1955 and his PhD from UCLA in 1958. He joined the Carnegie Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Industrial Administration in 1964. His teaching and research interests -- reflected in many of the papers included in his collection -- are monetary policy, size of government, macroeconomics, and international financial reform.

Meltzer has authored many papers and articles -- notably his two volume History of the Federal Reserve. In 1973, he helped found the Shadow Open Market Committee (SOMC), serving as chair until 1999. The SOMC was founded in order to evaluate the policy choices and actions of the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee (FOMC). In 1999-2000, he served as Chairman of the International Financial Institution Advisory Commission (IFIAC), also known as the Meltzer Commission. The Commission proposed major reforms of the International Monetary Fund, especially that of the World Bank. Additionally, he has served on a number of boards--The President's Council of Economic Advisors (1988-1989), Honorary Advisor for the Bank of Japan (1986-2002), and Cooper Tire and Rubber Company (1980-1998). He has acted as a consultant for the U.S. Treasury Department, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and The World Bank. He served on the Council of Economic Advisors for both Presidents Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. He is a former visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute where he was awarded the first ever recipient of the Irving Kristol Award in 2003.

The Allan H. Meltzer Papers, which date from 1958-2012, document Meltzer's career as an economist and professor of political economy at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business.
