The papers of Hubert I. Aaronson are housed in ten archival boxes. The collection contains materials relating to his academic and professional careers. The collection focuses almost exclusively on materials relating to his research, including publications and related correspondence. A few personal letters, cards, and pictures are included.

Biographical/Historical note
Hubert I Aaronson was born in New York City on July 10, 1924. In 1943, he joined the Army Air Force and was trained as a bombardier. During the later part of World War II, he flew 13 missions in B-17 bombers over Germany, Austria, and Hungary. After his service in the Army, Aaronson earned his B.S. (1948) and Ph.D. (1954) degrees at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering. At his time of studies, he was greatly influenced by R.F. Mehl. It was the research environment created by Mehl that developed Aaronson’s lifelong interest in metallurgy. He remained at Carnegie Tech as a research metallurgist until 1958. He then joined the Scientific Research Laboratory of the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan, where he stayed for 14 years. In 1979, Aaronson returned to Carnegie Mellon University as R.F. Mehl Professor of Metallurgy and Materials Science. After a very successful career, he retired from CMU in 1991. He is known for his large contribution to the knowledge of physical metallurgy and his work as a mentor for people all across the world.
