Scope and Contents note

The Collection consists of a large scrapbook, an All American stadium blanket and matching case, and some framed certificates issued by the Carnegie Institute of Technology Athletic Association. The scrapbook contains news clippings, correspondence, and memorabilia about Lloyd Yoder's as a football player and later as an NBC manager, as well as two photographs. Of particular note is a football banquet program signed by the 1926 Tartan team.

Biography

Lloyd Yoder was born on July 13, 1903, in Salem, Ohio. He played four year as a tackle for Carnegie Tech and was Captain of the Carnegie Tech's football team when the Tartans beat Notre Dame 19-0 in 1926. Known as "The Plaid Bull," he weight 202 lbs on a team whose average weight was 160lbs. His performance in the Notre Dame game won him a spot on the All-American team of that year -- the first Carnegie Tech player to do so. He played in the Shrine East-West game and was captain of the East team in 1926. The following year he played for the Olympic Club in San Francisco, and this time was captain of the West team in the Shrine game.

While at Carnegie Tech, Yoder majored in Architecture. His intesne involvement with football was only onde extracurricular activity among many. He belonged to the Delta Skulls, was elected President of Student Council for 1926, and all the while maintained an excellent academic standing.

Upon graudation, Yoder took a position with NBC in Chicago, eventually becoming NBC Vice President and General Manager of Chicago stations WMAQ and WMAQ-TV. He was with NBC for 40 years and also managed stations in San Francisco, Denver, and Cleveland. He served in World War II as a lieutenant commander in the Navy.

Yoder's interest in football continued, and he served for 2 years as an official for the Pacific Coast Conference, the Big 7 Conference, and the Skyline Conference. He also served as a director of the Pop Warner Junior Football Conference.

He was made a Trustee of CIT in 1960, the same year he was elected to the Football Hall of Fame. He died November 30, 1967, and was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

Custodial History note

The provenance is unknown as of November 5, 2013, but internal evidence (the folder of loose correspondence in Box 1) seems to indicate that the collection was donated after Lloyd Yoder's death.

A major part of the University Archives' Athletics Collection is devoted to football at Carnegie Mellon. The General Photographic Collection also holds two half-foot boxes of photographs on College football, as well as some photographs of Lloyd Yoder.
