Scope and Contents

This scrapbook contains material primarily related to the White Friars Club and the Beaux Art Ball.

The White Friars material is made up of press clippings from various Pittsburgh-area newspapers documenting the clubs activities and productions. There is also an essay on the purpose of the club.

The material relating to the Beaux Art Ball includes clippings, invitations and tickets, and the scripts from pagents put on in contunciton with the Ball. The Masque and Ball of Charlemagne and the Slavonic Bell are particularly well represented.

Additional material in the scrapbook relates to the College of Fine Arts and the School of Design. There are programs and invitations to various events including the corner stone laying for the School of Applied Design, an Atelier Dinner, and several pagents and masques.

History

The White Friars were the first first student drama club organized at Carnegie Tech. Founded in 1907, this all-male group produced a musical comedy about school life called "All in the Dormitory" in 1908. The show was well received and toured local towns such as Sewickley, New Castle, and Butler. By 1913 the White Friars had disappeared due to World War I and the drama department took over stage productions at Carnegie Tech.

The Beaux Art Ball was first proposed by Henry Hornbostel in 1911. The Beaux Art ball was a yearly event for students in the Fine Arts program and was based around a theme such as the Court of Charlemange or the Slavonic Ball. As part of their course work students created costumes, decorate the Fine Arts buildling and put on pagents. The ball was cancelled in 1928 after damage to the Fine Arts buildling and revived in 1933. The ball and been cancelled and reinstated at several points throughout it's history.
