Scope and Contents note

The Carnegie Day records are housed in one archival box. Two oversized folders are in the Archives’ second floor mapcases in Hunt. The items comprising the collection consist of programs, correspondence, memos, drafts of speeches, tickets and other ephemera. All items pertain to either the event itself or the planning of the event. The collection is comprised of three series: Programs, Administration, and Carnegie Honors. Most of the work that is done to plan Carnegie Day is shown in the Administrative records. The programs detail the actual events. Series III, Carnegie Honors consists of programs from the event (or actual lack thereof) that replaced the Carnegie Day festivities in 1960.

Biographical/Historical note

Starting in 1913, Carnegie Day celebrated Andrew Carnegie’s birthday. To commemorate Carnegie Tech’s founder, faculty, students, and other members of Carnegie Tech gathered to enjoy music from the school band, announcements of scholarships and honoraries, and a speech from an individual selected by Tech’s President. Originally held close to the Founder’s birthday on the 25th of November, Carnegie Day eventually became a part of the annual homecoming festivities. After World War I, the focus of Carnegie Day shifted from Andrew Carnegie’s birthday towards a more general celebration of Carnegie Tech. In 1960, Carnegie Day was discontinued with the scholarship and honorary portions of Carnegie Day incorporated into other Tech events. Following the elimination of Carnegie Day, publication of the Carnegie Honors booklet began in 1960.
