Biographical/Historical note

Maxine Flora Finsterwald, also known by her popular pen name, Maxine Wood was a famous playwright and author. She attended the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in the 1930’s and went on to write plays and short stories. Some of her published works include “The Seven Cord” (1929), “Seven Against One” (1930), and “Sandals and Golden Heels” (1948). Finsterwald is most recognized for her 1946 play, “On Whitman Avenue” which ran over one-hundred performances at the Cort Theater on Broadway.

These materials were donated by Maxine Finsterwald for use in the 75th Anniversary School of Drama Exhibit.The Maxine Flora Finsterwald collection was maintained by the archives as part of the School of Drama records until the material was deaccessioned in 2014 and currently exists as its own collection.
