James H. McGiffin Collection
Scope and Contents note
The James H. McGiffin Collection is comprised of news articles and clippings relating to the productions of the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. Topics of interest within the clippings are the Pittsburgh Playhouse and the Scotch and Soda Club. Also included, are copies of “The Play’s the Thing” articles which were authored by School of Drama professor and director of the Pittsburgh Art Society, Harold Geoghegan. The material in the collection is arranged chronologically.

Biographical/Historical note
James McGiffin (1921-2001) attended the School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon in the late 1940’s, during which he served on the executive board for the Scotch and Soda Club in 1947. He received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1949 and later received the Service Alumni Award from the University in 2001.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note
It is unknown how this collection originally arrived at the Carnegie Mellon University archives. The James H. McGiffin papers were maintained by the archives as part of the School of Drama records until the material was deaccessioned in 2014 and currently exists as its own collection.
